• Church of Mercy

  • One of the oldest buildings in Aljezur (1577).

It was rebuilt in the XVIIIth century after the earthquake of 1755. In 1821 it underwent refurbishments again for the reconstruction of the main altar.

Its facade exhibits a renaissance gateway, in a perfect arch, holding the inscription of 1577. The interior, of one single nave, is very simple. We highlight the triumphal arch and the wooden altar piece of the main chapel, with decorations reflecting a transition between the Baroque and Rococo styles.

The pulpit and stand, with a wooden chair ornamented with the coat of arms of Santa Casa da Misericórdia, dates from 1773.
