Aljezur Municipal Museum
-
The Municipal Museum is located in the former building of the municipality of Aljezur, built in the 19th century. The booty of this museum is divided into three distinct spaces: the Archaeological Nucleus, the Ethnographic Nucleus and the "Andalusian Legacy" in Islamic Room. The Archaeological Nucleus offers a wide range of objects that witness to more than 10000 years of human presence in the region. The "Mirense" archaeological booty (end of the Glaciar Age -7000 BC), Later Neolithic/ Chalcolithic (3000-2500 BC) and Bronze Age (1200-900/ 800 BC), a collection of "mirenses" axes, plates of shale and net weights, associated with a presence that was closely linked to the use of the natural resources of the territory. Yet here it is possible to observe the "Stone of Arms" with the blazonry of the Order of Santiago, probably from the old church of Aljezur, totally destroyed with the earthquake of 1755, as well as the shaft of the old pillory. The Ethnographic Nucleus consists of valuable booty connected to the everyday life of the late 19th and early 20th century, most notably ancient implements related to agricultural activities, livestock and fisheries. This nucleus recreate traditional rural environments, such as a bedroom and kitchen, decorated with the tools used in daily business."Andalusian Legacy" in Islamic Room integrates the Islamic period, from various locations in the municipality of Aljezur. The exhibition focuses primarily on material collected on the "Sítio da Barrada", especially ceramics. In a didactic perspective, the exhibition is accompanied by information on the use of the parts exposed in daily life and its relationship with other elements of islamic culture.
