The Arrábida Convent, built in the sixteenth century, covers, over its 25 hectares, the Old Convent – located in the highest part of the mountain, the New Monastery – located half slope, the Garden and the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus.
On top of the hill, the four chapels, the watchtowers to venerate the mysteries of Christ’s Passion and some cells dug in rocks form what is conventionally called the Old Convent.
The convent was founded in 1542 by Father Martinho de Santa Maria, a Castilian Minorite friar, whom João de Lencastre (1501-1571), first Duke of Aveiro, gave the land of the mountainside.
Visits to the New Monastery are held on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 10 am or 3 pm only by previous appointment, for groups with 10 or more persons. If there is a group with a minimum of 10 people and, if possible, a visit may be scheduled on another day of the week.
