In the mid-80 (twentieth century) Dunas de S. Jacinto Nature Reserve opened a large pond, in a burned area, and built some observatories on its banks. The pond has become an important place for wintering waterfowl, including the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), the Eurasian Teal (Anas crecca) and Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope), which reach here the most important effectives in the country. The Common Scoter (Melanitta nigra) and occasionally the Red-crested Pochard (Netta rufina), the Northern Pintail (Anas acuta) and the Common Pochard (Aythya ferina) can also be found here. The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) and the Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) are a constant, as is the Western Marsh-harrier (Circus aeruginosus).
In silence, watch the birds from the observatory and have a good time!
