Duke of Bragança’s lighthouse, known as a Berlenga’s beacon, became operational in 1842. Powered initially by liquid fuels (olive oil first and then petroleum), was electrified in 1926. Since 1985 it is automatic and, from 2000 on and along with the residences, works with solar energy, and, because of that, won the Environmental and National Defense Award. The light has an estimated range of 20 nautical miles. The tower is 29 m height and lighthouse is on the plateau of Berlenga Grande. It still has lighthouse keepers.
