• Casa Senhorial d'El Rei D. Miguel

  • Known as Casa Senhorial d’El Rei D. Miguel (King Miguel Manor-house), because he was probably here during Liberal Revolution, it is near the intersection of two important Roman roads, coming from Santarém and Lisbon, and, in medieval times, this area was the southern edge of the urban network of Rio Maior village. In the sixteenth century, wealthy people lived here, attracting also artisans and merchants. Built in the Middle Ages, it had its splendor in the 2nd half of the eighteenth century. It is typically a Manor-house of the Upper Ribatejo, with baroque facades, a small private chapel, with the upper floor (main floor) residential and ground floor for the kitchen, several storage and animals.

One of the main historical and cultural interest are the painted ceilings (removed for restoration), having one, the royal arms. Archaeological studies have found traces ranging from the Roman period to the twentieth century, including remains of a Roman oven and a burial, possibly from the same period, traces of medieval houses (XV century), a silo, one burial of a child and a tailoring of the fourteenth century.

It has a permanent exhibition on the Roman Villa of Rio Maior mainly with pieces proving the great luxury and wealth of the owners, including fragments of at least 5 statues, one in natural scale and almost intact: the Nymph of Rio Maior. Terra sigillata fragments, (imported pottery that was the service "chic" of those times), mostly of North African production, fragments of several glassware (cups, bowls, pitchers, etc.), bronze materials and some coins.
