Discovered in 1985 by Mr. Joaquim Pena, following the dismantling of a limestone bench for the production of sidewalk stone, the Pena Cave - so named in honor of its discoverer - it's a very interesting cavity equity point of view, integrating the largest underground room known in Portugal (125,000 m3 in volume). From the top of about 40 m of unevenness, it opens to the look of who visits it, a magnificent underground landscape whose aesthetic aspect assumes an unusual dimension, through a huge profusion of speleothems.
Given its biophysical characteristics and geographic location, it was selected to install there the 1st Underground Interpretation Center in Portugal. After three years of studies was opened on June 5th, 1997. . Open to the public (it has a technical support building, elevator, outdoor auditorium and a “speleodrome”), represents a unique experience of descending to the depths, combining the importance Scientific aspects to didactic and tourist aspects of high interest
