The lighthouse has a cylindrical tower with 28m high and a museum with 3 themed rooms: one about the Vincentian worship; other on the Discoveries and Portuguese Expansion (mainly shipbuilding, cartography, navigation and instruments); and the last one on lighthouses and its evolution, either in general or on about this lighthouse. Built during the reign of Queen Mary II and opened in October 1846, in 1908, the lighthouse underwent profound changes, receiving an optical device with a 32 miles range for a meteorological visibility of 10 miles, and floating in 313 kg of mercury.
Sagres promontory, that Romans called Promontorium Sacrum (sacred promontory), was a site of several cults over millennia being, even today, a mystical place. Before the fortress construction, to defend the coast from pirates and privateers here would have been a convent, perhaps from the thirteenth century. In the sixteenth century, the fortress was damaged by the English privateer Francis Drake. It is polygonal with a stronghold facing the sea, with two entrances to the square, still retaining part of the dependencies.

Tips
-
Gas station in Sagres.
Bring a warm jacket, because the cape area is quite windy. Early morning in autumn, this is an excellent place for birdwatching, especially to see migratory birds, with wind from the east. Bring your telescope and a seat. In the afternoon on Wednesday, ask if there are visits to the lighthouse.
