• Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe Hermitage

  • It is the oldest example of Gothic existing in the Algarve, it is likely that its construction was after the battle of Salado (1340), whose victory was attributed to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

It was a pilgrimage chapel from the fourteenth century, Romanesque-Gothic, under the invocation of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Just outside can be seen gargoyles and the powerful buttresses supporting the walls. In the front There is a rosette and a high-arched door, with capitals decorated by corded motifs and a human face. It has rectangular plan with only one nave and chancel, this one with ribbed vault, with 2 crockets, supported by pointed arches that rest on eight columns with capitels. These are decorated with branches, foliage, shells and human and animals representations. The triumphal arch and side columns of the chancel are in sandstone of different colors. Tradition tells us that Prince Henry prayed here.

This place where the chapel is, was related with fertility pagan cults. Next to it, there is the Centro Interpretativo da Casa Rural da Ermida (Interpretive Center of the Rural House of the Chapel) that features the interesting exhibition "Henry the infant who changed the world".
