• Sagres Fortress

  • Situated on Sagres Cape, Promontorium Sacrum famous for its unique beauty, Sagres Fortress owes its origin to one of the most important figures in the History of Portugal and the World: Prince Henry (1394-1460), who here founded a village and here died.

From the wall, built by the father of the Portuguese Discoveries, little remains, since the fort was rebuilt in the sixteenth century and on the second half of the eighteenth century, when it was adapted to the "Vauban" defensive system. The entrance of this bastion fortress is a good example of neoclassical architecture. Inside can be seen some cannons, one tower from the sixteenth century and also the Nossa Senhora da Graça (Our Lady of Grace) Church built in the sixteenth century at the precise spot where once had been the Church of Santa Maria, founded by the Prince but destroyed by the English privateer Francis Drake in 1587. One of the most significant attractions of Sagres fortress is undoubtedly the compass card, a sundial that many think is contemporary to the infant. Place of deep historical and symbolic value, the monument offers the opportunity to revisit the glorious period of the maritime discoveries and appreciate one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
