Remarkable example of nineteenth century civil architecture having Chiapa Monteiro as the author of the project. Here was the jail until the construction of new court in 1968. In 1972, after conservation and adaptation works, this imposing building opened its doors to the public as a Municipal Museum. The foundation of the Museum is earlier than 1934, thanks to the valuable contribution of a unique figure of Santiago do Cacém, João da Cruz e Silva (1881-1948), who, for decades, brought together a diverse set of Archaeology and Numismatics pieces, given to the municipality.
The museum has a wide ethnographic collection that has been enriched thanks to offers of local residents.
