• Quinta da Regaleira

  • One of the most surprising of all Sintra’s monuments, Quinta da Regaleira was built between 1904 and 1910, on the outskirts of the town. Formerly belonging to Regaleira’s viscountess, was acquired and enlarged by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), a very wealthy and refined man, an art collector and great philanthropist, becoming his favorite country estate.

Filled with mystical symbols, the unique buildings and landscape projects are from the Italian set-designer and architect Luigi Manini (1848-1936), who had worked in Chalet Biester (also in Sintra) and in Palace Hotel do Buçaco. Along with the mastery of sculptors, stonemasons and craftsmen, this incredible place was created.

Quinta da Regaleira has a research project about the bats living there (more detais).

Quinta da Regaleira, including the palace, chapel, towers, undeground structures, gardens and decorative elements, is classiied as 'Imóvel de Interesse Público'.

  • It is difficult to park next to Quinta da Regaleira, so consider parking your car in one of the existing car parks in Sintra and then walk to Regaleira. In the center of Sintra taste the typical sweets (‘queijadas’ and ‘travesseiros’).
