Elise Hensler, a Swiss-German opera singer, was the 2nd wife of D. Fernando II of Saxe-Coburg Gotha who, before marrying, gave her the title of Countess d'Edla. Around 1864-69, inside the Pena Park, the couple built a Chalet (designed by the Countess imitating the US wooden houses) and a privately Garden and romantic sensibility, refuge space and double the pleasure. Strategically located to the west of the Pena Palace, the building follows the model of the Alpine Chalets, then in vogue in Europe, starting the fashion of chalets on the coast of Estoril and Sintra. We highlight the wall paintings and stucco, to the Master Sebastião Ribeiro Alves, the tiles and the comprehensive use of cork as an ornamental element.
The chalet is a Public Interest since 1993, and is part of Sintra Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Was recovered after a fire, and received the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage - Europa Nostra 2013 in the category of "Conservation".
Outside the Chalet, the lush garden has natural vegetation of Sintra and species from all over the world, especially the US where the countess spent part of his youth. This exotic landscape highlighting the Fern garden of the Countess, the Garden of Joina, the Bower and ponds.
