The Moorish castle is one of the most emblematic spaces of the Romanticism in Sintra. Its current configuration is the result of three major construction stages. The cistern, located in the center of a fortress, was part of the Islamic project and was intended to supply water to a considerable population. It is assumed that the church of 'São Pedro de Canaferrim', one of the most important Romanic chapels, was built in the 2nd half of the twelfth century. Only in the nineteenth century, with the rediscovery and recovery of the Middle Age (in an idealized way), the old castle got the right atention.

In 2015, it was open the Interpretation Centre of the History of the Moorish Castle, on the church of São Pedro de Canaferrim and surrounding area.
