Opened in July 2007, the museum is in the former building of 'Hospital da Misericórdia', which have been designed by architect José Francisco de Abreu. Later it came to be called Hospital Distrital de Elvas. The building underwent extensive renovations to welcome visitors and the pieces that are there. The permanent collection belongs to Dr. António Cachola.

Emphasis on the facade, with a marble portal made by Gregório das Neves, commissioned in 1742, whose design announces rocaille features of late Baroque of D. John V, and the 'Sala do Consistório', with a marble altar and a rich set of tiles about 1740, that tells the story of the life of Sta. Isabel.

On the top floor of the museum, at the coffee shop, you can see a magnificent view of the city of Elvas.

  • Access to Elvas can be done by A6, Caia Road / N4, N246.

    In Elvas, the N4 / Av. de Badajoz, at the roundabout with the fountain in the center and near the municipal garden, cut to the 'Centro Histórico'. Continue to R. de Alferes C. Pinto. Keep to the right towards R. da Cadeia.

    The museum is located near the Post Office.
