• Mértola Museum - Castel's 'Alcáçova'

  • On the north side of the slope of the Castle, there was the forum of the Roman city of Myrtilis which built upon the wall and an underground gallery - the cryptopórtico - about 30 m long and 6 high.

Subsequently, over the cryptopórtico were built religious buildings, including a baptistery from the fifth and sixth centuries, with marble and surrounded by a set of polychrome mosaics; some remaining fragments, with animals and game scenes, can be seen today .

In the century XII and XIII in the Islamic era, the area was occupied by a neighborhood of about 30 homes. After the Christian conquest of 1238, the neighborhood is destroied and the area was used as a cemetery.
