Integrated in the so-called "Iberian Pyrite Belt", the São Domingos mine was intensively exploited by the Romans (particularly due to copper and gold) and during the 19th and 20th centuries. The exploitation of copper, sulphur, gold, lead and zinc ended in 1962 and as a result it left an open-cast structure called corta.
This geosite with high scientific interest, allows us to know the internal structure of rocks with this rare sulphide mineralization originated in ancient submarine volcanic phenomena occurring about 360 million years ago. The long mining tradition can be witnessed in the ancient buildings and support structures that still exist in the vicinity.
