  • The rocks along the road connectiing Salgueiros to Pomarão are the most peculiar in the Iberian Peninsula. Some of these rocks, which originated in episodes of submarine volcanism about 350 million years ago, show very high levels of copper and tin that justify the existence of important mines in the lower Alentejo, like Neves-Corvo and Aljustrel. The sequence of metamorphic rocks of Pomarão is affected by a series of folds of tectonic origin.
