Base Characterization
-
The rocks exposed in the coastal cliffs of Mareta and Cilheta are fundamental to the study of Upper Middle Jurassic (175 to 150 million years ago) in the context of the Iberian Peninsula. The limestones at the base of the cliffs contain traces of coral reefs, originated in a shallow continental shelf in warmer water than today. The marly layers overlapping them show deeper marine environments. During the last glaciation, about 19,000 years ago, eolianites were formed, wind accumulations formed against the coastal cliffs, when the average sea level was lower than the current one.
