  • Along the coast of Alentejo, there are essentially low-grade metamorphic rocks of the Carbonic Period (about 320 million years ago). These rocks, originating from sediments accumulated in the bottom of an ancient ocean, show spectacular folds due to tectonic forces that, about 300 million years ago, slowly deformed the initially horizontal layers. The intensely bent rocks of the mouth of the Ouriços river mouth present an evident aesthetic value.
