  • This site is an excellent example of glaciation during the Pleistocene, witnessing the importance of the glaciation episodes in the Peneda mountain range and, in general, in the mountains of northwestern Portugal. Here it is possible to see a large group of lateral moraines and dispersed blocks and, at 900 m altitude, the existence of subglaciary till with about 3 m of thickness, formed by material with high hardness and compactness, light colour and predominance of a silt-sandy matrix involving rolled stones of different sizes. This deposit was uncovered on slopes during the maintenance works of the road linking Gavieira village to the “brandas” of Junqueira and Gorbelas, that are relatively close.

“Brandas” are temporary villages occupied in summer by the inhabitants and their herds to spend to take advantage of the pastures.

Glacier - mass of ice, formed by the recrystallization of snow, that flows forward, or has flowed at some time in the past.

Moraine – rock accumulation deposited primarily by the direct action of a glacier.

Pleistocene – Quaternary epoch lasted from 1,640,000 to about 10,000 years ago, in which several hominids appeared and with great fluctuations in temperature having glacial periods followed by warmer interglacial periods.

Till - sediments deposited by melting glaciers or ice sheets.
