  • The rectilinear valley of Gerês river is about 28 km long and corresponds to the geological fault of the Gerês-Lobios (Spain) related to late-hercynian tensions that led to a fracturing that cut and displaced the granites of this region. With an NNE-SSW direction, this fault was responsible for the displacement of the valleys of Cávado and Homem rivers and the thermal springs of the Gerês village and Rio Caldo (Spain). In fact, the clear escarpment limits an eastern block of the Gerês mountain range that was raised about 200 m above the western block. Gerês and Lobios hydromineral systems have an unusual mineralization, namely in terms of fluorine and boron levels.

Fault –cracks in the Earth's crust where movement occurs on at least one side of the fault.

Late-hercynian - between 310 million years (MA) and 270 MA.
