Base Characterization
-
In Homem river valley, is possible to see traces of glaciations that occurred in the Pleistocene, a period in which hominids already existed and was characterized by the alternation of glacial and interglacial periods.
In fact, this is an old glacier valley that, in some areas, still has a typical U-shaped cross-section with a broad bottom, proof that it was occupied by a glacier tongue, about 300 m thick. Longitudinally it has small glacial lakes in rosary. Vestiges of the glaciations are also the existence of a high amount of deposits transported by the river and glacier (fluvioglaciários) or of till subglaciary to 725 m of altitude.
Glacier - mass of ice, formed by the recrystallization of snow, that flows forward, or has flowed at some time in the past.
Glacier tongue - the lower, elongate part of a valley glacier.
Pleistocene – Quaternary epoch lasted from 1,640,000 to about 10,000 years ago, in which several hominids appeared and with great fluctuations in temperature having glacial periods followed by warmer interglacial periods.
Till - sediments deposited by melting glaciers or ice sheets.
