  • Poiares's syncline is one of the most beautiful examples of the Appalachian relief in Portugal. Indeed, in this area of Mosteiro creek, a Douro river tributary, the lithological (rock types) and structural aspects can be observed, while at Penedo Durão viewpoint (also in the Douro International Nature Park), you can see the geomorphological aspects (relief forms), including a great view on the Douro river canyon.

Appalachian relief – relief resulting from differential erosion on an old erosion surface in a region with folds, thus presenting crests and valleys, parallel to each other. The name comes from the Appalachian Mountains in the USA.

Geomorphology – part of geology that studies the shapes and evolution of Earth’s reliefs.

Syncline – fold concave upward in which each half of the fold dips toward the trough of the fold.
