  • In the old quarry of Lomba dos Pianos, there is a sill with intermediate composition between those of a trachyte and those of a basalt intruded among the Cretaceous limestones that, due to the contact, underwent metamorphosis. The sill has a maximum thickness of 20 meters and is 3 km along the coast.

    It is possible to see here phenomena of columnar and spheroidal disjunction, i.e. separation of the vein into columns and beads.

     

    Metamorphism – changing of the rocks properties due to heat or pressure.

    Sill – an igneous vein injected, while molten, between sedimentary or volcanic beds.
