The blue rock thrush is a large and slender passerine bird with a long beak. The male exhibits, during the mating season, a blue colouration, justifying its name, dark wings, and during the rest of the year its plumage is similar to that of the females or young, and with a vermicular pattern on the ventral surface. It can measure up to 23 cm long.

The blue rock thrush inhabits rocky and rough areas, such as scarped river valleys, high coastal cliffs, and man made constructions such as abandoned quarries bridges or castles.

The blue rock thrush feeds mainly on invertebrates, but also on small geckos and vegetable matter.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 1000 and 5000 couples.
