The black wheatear is a robust bodied passerine bird, with a relatively large head, strong beak and round wings. It exhibits a predominantly dark colouration, black on the males and leaf brown on the females, while the posterior part of the abdomen is white. During flight, the characteristic colouration of the tail can be seen, white with a T shaped black spot on the extremity. It can measure up to 18 cm long.

The black wheatear inhabits mainly arid areas with rocky cliffs, it can also be found on caves, derelict buildings or rocky valleys, close to low bushland or ledged olive groves.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 100 and 500 couples.
