  • The Eurasian Green Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in Portugal. Its body is adapted to live among the trees, by having a strong beak, robust feet with mobile fingers and sharp claws. Its plumage is predominantly green, which explains its name, exhibiting a lighter ventral surface, a red head and a spot on its face, which is red for the males and black for the females. It can grow to be 36 cm long and have 51 cm span.

  • The Eurasian Green Woodpecker frequents forest areas and sometimes open fields. It is an elusive bird, but can be detected by its characteristic calling which is similar to a laugh. 

  • All year long

  • The Eurasian Green Woodpecker feeds mainly on ants, but also on other invertebrates.

  • The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 10 thousand and 50 thousand couples.
