The Eurasian Green Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in Portugal. Its body is adapted to live among the trees, by having a strong beak, robust feet with mobile fingers and sharp claws. Its plumage is predominantly green, which explains its name, exhibiting a lighter ventral surface, a red head and a spot on its face, which is red for the males and black for the females. It can grow to be 36 cm long and have 51 cm span.
