The European Nightjar is a nightly bird with a plump appearance when perched, exhibiting a large head, small beak, neck and short legs and long tails and wings. Its plumage is soft with a grey colouration, spotted brown, beige and black. It can grow to be 28 cm long and have 59 cm span.

The European Nightjar lives on areas with scattered trees or shrubbery, such a dunes, moist areas or young forest populations. This mysterious nocturnal bird has a characteristic vocalization formed by a continuous trill.

The European Nightjar feeds on insects, especially nightly butterflies and coleoptera, since it has specialized in its capture.
