  • The European Nightjar is a nightly bird with a plump appearance when perched, exhibiting a large head, small beak, neck and short legs and long tails and wings. Its plumage is soft with a grey colouration, spotted brown, beige and black. It can grow to be 28 cm long and have 59 cm span.

  • The European Nightjar lives on areas with scattered trees or shrubbery, such a dunes, moist areas or young forest populations. This mysterious nocturnal bird has a characteristic vocalization formed by a continuous trill.

  • Spring and Summer

  • The European Nightjar feeds on insects, especially nightly butterflies and coleoptera, since it has specialized in its capture.

  • The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 1500 and 9000 males.
