The Eurasian eagle-owl is the biggest nocturnal bird of prey of Portugal, being very charismatic. It exhibits big orange eyes, two long plumes on its head that remind of ears, large head, robust body and dense and fluffy plumage. It has a brown colouration, while the dorsal surface is darker, with black mesh and stripes, and the dorsal surface is lighter with thick dark stripes on the chest area and a white throat. It can grow to be 73 cm long and have 170 cm span.

The Eurasian eagle-owl lives on quiet and remote areas, with rocky valleys and large water courses, surrounded by shrubbery and close to scarce vegetation areas.

The Eurasian eagle-owl feeds mainly on mammals and small to medium sized birds and less frequently on reptiles, amphibians, fish and corpses.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 380 and 580 couples.
