The Cuckoo is a a bird with a slender body, long and round tail and pointy wings. It exhibits a white striped plumage on the ventral surface, which contrasts with the uniform greyish blue tone of the dorsal surface, with a yellow colouration around its eyes, base of the beak and legs. The female has a yellow chest and can exhibit a more red general colouration. It can grow to be 36 cm long and have 60 cm span.

The cuckoo exists in several arboreal habitats, preferring however riparian areas, where it can be detected by its charismatic vocalization.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 50 thousand and 100 thousand males.
