The kentish plover is a small and plum wader bird, with a black stripe on its neck with a fault at the front. It shows a brown colouration on its head and back and white on its ventral surface, wide head, narrow black beak and long black legs. It can measure up to 17 cm long.

The kentish plover exists on sandy littoral areas, on coastal ponds, estuaries, salt lakes, rice fields and flooded fields. It is represented on the symbol of the Natural Park of the North Coastline.

The kentish plover feeds on invertebrates, in coastal or inland areas. It obtains food by walking and running in shallow waters, in the low tide or in the open field.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 3500 and 4000 individuals.
