The Great bustard is the most corpulent bird in our country, it exhibits a characteristic silhouette, with a thick neck, robust chest, long wings and conspicuous tail. Its plumage is of a brownish red while its head and neck are greyish blue and the wings and belly are predominantly white. The female has paler tones. It can grow to be 105 cm long and have 240 cm span, while the male is bigger than the female.

The Great bustard is a steppe bird which inhabits large sections of open and not too wavy field in a mosaic constituted by wheat fields, stubbles, fallow lands and pastures. It is one of the most emblematic species of Alentejo.

The Great bustard feeds mainly of vegetable matter (leaves, inflorescences, stalks, seeds, rhizomes), and also on insects and small vertebrates (reptiles, amphibians and rodents) mainly on summer.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be of 701 males.
