  • The common moorhen is a waterfowl with grey plumage colouration, exhibiting a brown tone on its back, which contrasts with its red forehead, the red beak with a yellow tip, the big green legs and the white spots on the tail and flanks. The young are brownish grey. It can measure up to 31 cm long.

  • The common moorhen inhabits moist areas with abundant emerging vegetation, such as estuaries, coastal ponds, water courses, bogs and weirs. It can be seen walking through the aquatic fluctuating foliage, which is possible due to its long fingers.

  • The common moorhen has an omnivorous diet, feeding on invertebrates and small vertebrates, fruits and green parts from aquatic plants. It obtains food underwater, by submerging its head, on the surface, or in meadows and cultivated fields.
