The peregrine falcon is the biggest falcon in Portugal. This bird of prey has a characteristic silhouette which shows its wide, pointy wings. Its general colouration is grey with transversal stripes, having a brown tone on its dorsal surface, light on the base of its tail, dark head, white chest and yellow legs. The young are brown. It can grow to be 51 cm long and have 113 cm span, while the female is bigger than the male.

The peregrine falcon exists in areas with rocky outcrops of medium to large size, in valleys, hills and coastal cliffs, near extensive open fields such as steppes, moist areas and coastal cliffs, where it hunts. It nests in large crags or on the sea coast.

The peregrine falcon feeds on other birds, which it captures with a charismatic and high speed nosedive.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 80 and 100 couples.
