The osprey is a large bird of prey, with long and narrow wings and a short tail. It exhibits a brown plumage on its dorsal surface and white on the ventral surface, with dark marks on its wings, white head with a black band in the shape of a mask and yellow eyes, or orange if they're young. It can grow to be 60 cm long and have 167 cm span.

Base Characterization

The osprey lives in coastal areas, estuaries, coastal ponds and reservoirs, and also fishes in moist interior areas, such as reservoirs and weirs.

All year long

The Osprey feeds almost exclusively on fish, salt water and fresh water, such as carps, bass, mullets and bream, which it captures by performing a nosedive.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 50 and 100 individuals.
