  • The golden eagle is the largest eagle in our country, and it has a characteristic silhouette in flight with its large wings, that are narrower on the base, long tail and projected head. The adults have a dark brown plumage with grey spots and a brownish yellow nape and the young exhibit white spots on their wings and tail. It can grow to be 93 cm long and have 225 cm span.

  • The golden eagle exists in habitats with little human presence, in mountainous areas or the valleys of large rivers, with steep and harsh slopes or mountainous cliffs, close to open areas with low or scattered vegetation.

  • All year long

  • The golden eagle feeds on medium sized prey (mammals, birds and reptiles) and on dead animals, when there is little prey.

  • The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 64 and 80 couples.
