The northern goshawk is a bird of prey with a strong body, robust wings and long tail. The male has a blue plumage, while the female is grey in the dorsal surface and white in the ventral surface, with grey stripes and exhibiting a white stripe above its eyes. It can grow to be 64 cm long and have 120 cm span, while the female is bigger than the male.

The northern goshawk lives in forest areas localized in river embankments, close to open fields, such as scattered brushwood, agricultural plantations and pastures. It is represented on the symbol of the Protected Landscape of the Serra do Açor.

The northern goshawk feeds on medium sized birds and mammals.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 500 and 1500 couples.
