The red kite is a bird of prey with a long and markedly bifurcated tail, reddish brown on its dorsal surface, long and arched wings with white spots on it ventral surface and a greyish head contrasting with the light brown found in the rest of the body. It can grow to be 72 cm long and have 165 cm span.

Base Characterization

The red kite is a forest bird which inhabits areas with smooth relief (plains and plateaus) with agro-forestry-pastoral use, such as relatively open cork oak plantations, thickets close to marshes and agricultural areas.

The red kite is a predator and a scavenger, feeding on small animals (micro mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates), dead animals and human waste.

The Portuguese populations is estimated to be 50 and 100 nesting pairs and 2000 to 5000 wintering individuals.
