  • The red kite is a bird of prey with a long and markedly bifurcated tail, reddish brown on its dorsal surface, long and arched wings with white spots on it ventral surface and a greyish head contrasting with the light brown found in the rest of the body. It can grow to be 72 cm long and have 165 cm span.

  • The red kite is a forest bird which inhabits areas with smooth relief (plains and plateaus) with agro-forestry-pastoral use, such as relatively open cork oak plantations, thickets close to marshes and agricultural areas.  

  • All year long

  • The red kite is a predator and a scavenger, feeding on small animals (micro mammals, birds, fish and invertebrates), dead animals and human waste.

  • The Portuguese populations is estimated to be 50 and 100 nesting pairs and 2000 to 5000 wintering individuals.
