  • The Portuguese oyster is a marine bivalve that has a long and laminate shell, composed by two valves, one of which is concave and the other is flat. The shell is white with violet and sometimes yellow spots. It can grow up to 20 cm long, however it most commonly reaches 10 cm.

  • The Portuguese oyster lives in estuaries and salt water shallow rivers in the intertidal zone, on rocks and stones, and can form reefs. Today there are few pure populations of this species, namely on the Sado and Mira rivers.
