The common teal is the smallest duck in Europe. This dabbling duck exhibits a characteristic green spot in its wings, which is visible during flight. The female is brown and the male, during mating season, exhibits an exuberant plumage, with a brownish red head, crossed by metallic green lateral bands, a white stripe on the flanks, a yellow spot under the tail and white chest. It can grow to be 38 cm long and have 59 cm span.

The common teal exists on a great variety of moist areas, mainly estuaries, water courses, bogs, weirs and dams scattered throughout the country.

Autumn and Winter

In winter, feeds on vegetable matter and aquatic invertebrates in the spring and summer. The food is collected on the surface, walking slowly in shallow water and filtering the mud with its beak or dipping the head or body.
