The flamingo is an emblematic waterfowl of our country. It has a white colouration with pink tones and red and black spots on its wings, it has a thick and curved beak and long neck and legs. While young they are grey. It can grow to be 145 cm high and have 170 cm span.

Base Characterization

The flamingo exists in moist and quiet areas with shallow waters, such as estuaries, salt water, rice fields, coastal ponds, and occasionally in dams.

All year long

The flamingo feeds on molluscs, crustaceans, annelids, insects, algae and seeds. It obtains food by walking slowly on low tide or shallow waters, occasionally submerging its head and moving it laterally, with the objective of filtering the water with its beak.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be of 5133 individuals.
