The glossy ibis is a bird that has an exotic appearance, with a long and curved beak, long neck and legs, and a dark brown plumage with green and purple reflections. While young it exhibits white dots on its head. It can grow to be 65 cm long and have 105 cm span.

The glossy ibis exists on the coastal edge, estuaries, coastal ponds, moist meadows, water courses and bogs, reproducing in shallow swamps with abundant vegetation. It frequently forms flocks which may include other waterfowl.

The glossy ibis feeds on insects, other invertebrates and small vertebrates. It obtains food by moving through the mud or in shallow waters.
