  • The great cormorant is a slender waterfowl that is almost completely black, with a strong and yellow beak, long tail and neck and short legs. In the mating season it exhibits white spots on its throat and face. It can grow to be 94 cm long and have 149 cm span.

  • The great cormorant uses a great variety of aquatic habitats, such as fresh water, salt water, and marine. It is found in coastal areas or shallow estuaries and, in the interior of the country, in small riversides, weirs, quagmires, ponds and marshlands.

  • Autumn and Winter

  • The great cormorant feeds mainly on fish, which it hunts by day, but also on crustaceans and small invertebrates.

  • The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be of 14 600 individuals.
