  • The black-necked grebe is a waterfowl with a slender body, high forehead and red eyes. Its back is black and its belly is grey, and it exhibits, on the mating season, an unmistakable yellow plume on its face and brownish red flanks. It can measure up to 34 cm long.

  • The black-necked grebe lives on estuaries, coastal ponds and reservoirs, reproducing in shallow lakes with abundant emerging vegetation. The Sado estuary is one of the few areas in our country where this rare grebe exists in larger numbers.

  • Autumn and Winter

  • The black-necked grebe feeds on insects, molluscs, crustaceans, small fish, amphibians and plant remains. It obtains its food under water, immersing its whole body or just its head.

  • The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 100 and 200 individuals.
