The freshwater blenny is a fresh water fish that exhibits dark transversal spots throughout its body and small or non existent scales. It has a threadlike tentacle above its eye, a prominent mouth and long fins. In the mating period, the males exhibit a developed cephalic crest.

The freshwater blenny inhabits the rocky bottoms of watercourses with cold and well oxygenated water, or in areas of standing water with thick gravel bottom, to perform the laying, which will be cared for by the males.

The freshwater blenny feeds on aquatic insects and occasionally on small fish and vegetable matter.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be more than 10 thousand individuals.
