The Guadiana nase inhabits medium river courses, in areas with standing water or weak current, however it reproduces in areas with current, shallow and have a gravel riverbed.

The Guadiana nase feeds on algae, seeds, vegetable debris and aquatic invertebrates, which it obtains near the river's bottom.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be more than 10 thousand individuals.
