  • The otter is a carnivorous mammal with an elongated body, round muzzle, short limbs, paws with interdigital membranes, long and tapered tail. It exhibits a short brown fur, while its neck and belly are white. It's body can measure up to 70 cm long with a 50 cm tail and it can weigh 7 kg.

  • The otter exists in every kind of well preserved aquatic habitat with a vegetable covering, such as lakes, rivers, streams, bogs, marshlands and small reservoirs, and estuaries. In the south east of Alentejo it uses the marine surroundings and the coastal strip as habitat. It is represented on the symbol of Paul da Tornada Local Nature Reserve.

  • The otter feeds mainly on fish, but can also include in its diet amphibians, crustaceans, insects, small mammals, waterfowl and reptiles, depending on the place and season.

  • The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be between 2 thousand and 10 thousand individuals.
