The European polecat is a carnivorous mammal with elongated body and short limbs. It exhibits a brown general colouration with white spots on the tip of its muzzle and the edge of its ears. Its body can measure up to 40 cm long with a 16 cm tail and it can weigh 1 kg, while the male is bigger than the female.

The European polecat occupies all kinds of habitats, including forests, if they're not too dense, bushland, riparian vegetation, agricultural and flooded fields ans edges, taking advantage of mosaic landscapes.

The European polecat feeds on invertebrates and vertebrates, aquatic and terrestrial, and on fruits.

The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be more than 10 thousand individuals.
