  • The greater mouse-eared bat is the largest cave bat in Portugal. It has a brown colouration on its back and grey in its belly and big sized ears. It's body can measure up to 7.3 cm long with a 5.2 cm tail and it can weigh 34 g.

  • The greater mouse-eared bat finds shelter, in our country, preferably in caves or mines. It hunts in agricultural soils with reduced grass and bush covering.

  • Spring, Summer and Autumn. However is is difficult to see because it is a rare specie with nocturnal activity.

  • The greater mouse-eared bat feeds preferably on beetles, crickets and spiders, which it localizes using the sound these creatures make by moving on the ground.

  • The Portuguese population of this species is estimated to be smaller than 10 thousand individuals. (Source: Red Book of the Portuguese Vertebrates, 2005).
